Unless requested by another patron, OSU owned books can be renewed indefinitely and OhioLINK books can be renewed 4 times. You may renew materials online, by phone, or at the desk. A $10.00, per day, fine is charged if you do not return materials that someone else has requested. No overdue fines are charged on materials not requested by someone else. However, if you do not respond to overdue notices, the item will be declared lost and billed and you will be charged to replace the item. Fines are charged on overdue reserve materials ($2.00 for the hour, $5.00 per hour thereafter). Failure to return materials and pay fines will result in a hold being placed on your records.

Unlike OSU, OhioLINK and SearchOhio overdue fines are charged at the rate of $.50 per day whether the item has been recalled or not. OhioLINK items are assumed lost if overdue more than 30 days. A $50.00 fine will be charged for items that are assumed lost and then returned. SearchOhio items lost will be billed $25.00 if more than 30 days overdue. Fines may be paid at Fees and Deposits.

What if the book I need is checked out? What if the book I borrowed is requested (recalled) by another patron?

You may request most circulating items listed as available or checked out. Available items will be retrieved and held for you at the library you select. A checked out item will be recalled from the current borrower and you will be sent a courtesy e-mail notice when the book is ready for pickup.

An item may be recalled from you by another patron at any time, which may change the item's due date. A courtesy e-mail notice will be sent notifying you of any recall(s) on your item(s) with a due date within 10 days from the date the request was placed on the item, or 21 days from the date of check-out, whichever is greater. Please respond to these notices promptly. Overdue fines accrue at the rate of $10.00/day per recalled item. Items that have been recalled may not be renewed.

If the book you need is not available or not listed in the OSU Libraries Catalog, you may want to check availability by following these steps:

  • If you cannot locate the item through OhioLINK, go to step 3.

How do I pay Library fines? How do I appeal my Library fines?

Payment of Fees

Please contact the circulation desk for assistance.

Fine Appeals

University Libraries make every effort to regulate fines according to well defined standards. However, under some circumstances you may have sound reasons for appealing a fine. Please review the Libraries' Circulation Services and Policies prior to filing an appeal.

All Appeals must be submitted using the Library Appeal Form. Patrons can expect a response within 5 business days during normal activity levels.

Appeals must be submitted using the form within thirty days, (1) month, of the fine date to be considered. Please include copies of receipts, library notices, and other useful documentation when submitting the Library Appeal Form.

All reasonable concerns related to Library charges will be considered; however, the following are NOT considered reasons on which an appeal can be based:

  • Lack of understanding of Library policies. Circulation policies are available on the web and are the responsibility of the patron to read and understand.
  • Unwillingness to take responsibility for materials checked out to you which you loaned to another person or allowed others to use.
  • Non-receipt, late receipt, or inattention to library email notification. Renewal reminders are sent as a courtesy by the Libraries; therefore, it is the patrons' responsibility to monitor My Library Account and ensure prompt renewal of items with or without these reminders. Patrons not reading e-mail due to conferences, vacations, holidays, semester breaks, etc, are still responsible for responding. It is the patron's responsibility to make arrangements for maintenance of their account during these times of absence.

How do I reserve a group study room in Warner Library?

We have rooms to accommodate 2 to 8 people as well as a classroom with room for 44 for presentations/training purposes. Also available for reserve is the Constance Corkwell Baldwin Fireplace Lounge. Please contact the circulation desk to place reservations.

Do Visiting Scholars have access to OSU materials?

Courtesy patrons will have a borrowing limit of up to ten items with a maximum of five OhioLINK items for a 21 day loan period, and up to six possible renewals, provided another patron does not place a hold on the item.

Visiting Scholars and other individuals who are currently not a faculty, staff, or student members at Ohio State University may be eligible for a courtesy card. To determine your eligibility, please contact us.

Please note: A courtesy library card enables an individual who is not a student, faculty or staff member of the Ohio State University to borrow any regular circulating OSU item and up to five items from OhioLINK.

Interlibrary Loan and publisher license agreements limit access to the Libraries electronic journals, databases, and books to current students, faculty, and staff of The Ohio State University. This page provides information to patrons unaffiliated with the University wishing to access online scholarly journals articles.

Courtesy card holders are subject to the same policies as students, faculty and staff and are responsible for returning and renewing materials checked out on their library account in a timely manner.
